Leeds City Schools Child Nutrition Program promotes an optimal learning environment by planning, preparing, and serving a nutritious and balanced diet to all students. A balanced diet provides at least one-third of the United States Department of Agriculture's recommended daily allowances for each food nutrient/component. The Child Nutrition Program promotes nutritional awareness as an integral part of the total education experience for children by offering and encouraging healthy food options. By providing all students the opportunity to acquire a functional knowledge of health and nutrition, the Child Nutrition Program assists children in obtaining optimal physical and mental development.
The Child Nutrition Program applies strict business regulations and City of Leeds Board of Education policies to ensure success. The selling of ALL non-essential foods (foods that do not meet USDA and/or Smart Snack guidelines) on school property is not permitted during the day. Foods available during school hours should meet current guidelines to promote student health and the reduction of childhood obesity.
Professional development shall be provided for the school food service personnel. Educational opportunities focusing on the various aspects of the Child Nutrition Program promotes the development of the individual and/or program. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans serves as the basis for planning menus and preparing meals.
*Leeds City Schools Child Nutrition Program operates under the supervision of the National School Lunch Program and complies with the guidelines set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Alabama State Department of Education.
